In Honor of Carol Troxell

In January, the Charlottesville community suffered a terrible loss with the sudden passing of Carol Troxell, voracious reader, supporter of authors, and thirty-year owner of New Dominion Bookshop.

If you have ever attended a Festival program at New Dominion or just explored the shelves on your own time, you are familiar with many aspects of Carol’s work: her longtime community engagement, devoted service to her customers, and advocacy for the large family of authors who have delighted in reading at the shop. We hope that you might be willing to help us to remember her efforts.

Over the past eight months, in discussion with her husband and the store’s new manager, we have considered how we could honor Carol’s memory, her influence on Charlottesville’s reputation as a literary community, her unerring knack for recommending books for any sort of reader, her strong support for the Virginia Festival of the Book, and her legacy among the shelves at New Dominion.

Now, we invite you to join us in supporting the Carol Troxell Fund—celebrating voracious reading.

The 2018 Virginia Festival of the Book will honor Carol in its printed program and feature an author as the Carol Troxell Reader, featuring him or her in a solo reading at New Dominion in addition to their regular program. To celebrate the breadth of Carol’s reading, the genre of the selected author will vary each year, building a wide-ranging list of Carol Troxell titles over time.

By contributing to the Carol Troxell Fund, you will help the Festival promote the Carol Troxell Readers and cover travel and lodging for the selected authors, this year and in the future. We hope you can help us honor Carol’s memory in this way.
